Decorating On A Budget
I recently had the pleasure to transform an extra bedroom into a daddy/daughter office space. My client's daughter wanted a room to do crafts and homework and also hang out with dad - which melted my heart as a daddy’s girl myself. After discussing what she was looking for and doing some investigating on her personality, likes/dislikes, and vision for the room, I got to work sourcing inexpensive items to bring the room together.
I wanted a color palette that indulged her love for pink while giving it a more grown up look. I used purple painters tape (do yourself a favor and try it!) to make triangles of different colors. The key is to not overthink the placement and shape of each one and just start putting up the tape and painting. I used paint samples to keep costs low and it was more than enough! She now has the extra to use for her own art.
The desk was an Ikea hack - and I think it turned out great! Each cube was simple to assemble, sturdy and gave the storage space I needed. 4 cubes allowed me to get creative making 2 desks into one. The tops are large pieces of project boards from Home Depot that I painted using painters tape and the colors used on the walls.
Budget for the room was $500 (**this does not include my fee**):
Ikea cubes - $35 each
Ikea floating shelves - $20
Paint samples from Menard’s - $24
Desk tops from HD - $18.51
Aqua Chairs - scored on Facebook Market for $40
Pink fur rug and hanging chandeliers from Ross - $102
All accessories & accents purchased from Goodwill/Thrift stores
This young lady was thrilled with her room and beyond surprised! Her hamster, Samantha, even got an updated place to chill and keep an eye on things. Samantha and I had many conversations during my time working there and I thought we had bonded, however, the bite on my finger as I said goodbye leads me to believe she was ready for me to go…
