the nook

We have lived in Lake of the Ozarks for almost three years and have tackled some big projects at our lake house -  the kitchen, master bathroom, and a septic system (ugh I hate spending money on things I can’t see!).  However, our most recent small project has been my favorite!

Early on in the rehab we discovered that under the stairs to the basement was an unfinished space.  It was walled off so I had to cut a hole through one of the closets behind the stairs to peek in.  To my delight there it was…approximately 4ft by 7ft of EMPTY space!  Lake houses are notoriously short on storage space so this was a huge discovery. My brain said, “make it a closet, make it a closet”,  but my heart said, “reading nook, reading nook!”.  So obviously we made it a reading nook for the kids.

The nook accommodates a twin size futon mattress. This was more affordable than a custom made cushion, plus it is big enough to double as sleeping space if needed.

Had to show you my deer print carpet because it’s AMAZING!

The accent wall is a Heron peel and stick wallpaper - which was easy to install and adds a gender neutral touch for my family - 2 boys and 1 girl. The bookshelf is see through to the hallway that adds a little more light and openness in the dark hallway.

Throughout the house I have included some modern touches while staying true to it’s rustic, “old lake house”, character so the nook has a little of both.  Adding the electrical outlet to support a USB and an Iphone charging cord was a game changer.  With all the different devices these days, no one goes uncharged in the nook. You can read...OR Netflix and chill.

Maximizing space in any house is important - no matter what size. Unused square footage should be transformed or repurposed to accommodate your family. I’m not suggesting you turn your dining room into a workout room, we need to keep in mind resale value, but attics, large closets, and under the stairs are great for transformation.
